After reading some of the posts other have written, I went to check out her performance. She is BRILLIANT. Hers is a very different Caroline than Sharon D. Clarke's and Tonya Pinkins's--much more overtly vulnerable--but she absolutely belongs in the same league as them, and, vocally, I've never heard Lots Wife delivered so thrillingly. It's put over with all the power that you would expect from a former Effie.
When the show first went into previews, I believe Brown was also the only credited understudy for Dotty. Either I'm misremembering or they've hired an additional cover because Rheaume Crenshaw was on for Anastacia McCleskey. (I hadn't realized that Tamika Lawrence had left.) Crenshaw was also fantastic. Maybe more than any other Caroline/Dotty pairing, I believed that this Caroline and this Dotty had a long history of friendship.
If you're a fan of the musical, it is absolutely worth returning to see Brown in one of her remaining scheduled performances on Jan. 2. |
