| A hit show on Broadway will be announcing its closing tomorrow morning as the result of the constant cancellations due to COVID that have left so many theater goers with such bad feelings. Apparently it’s felt that the outlook through the winter months is just too poor to continue the run. From what I understand, the show will close sometime in mid January. Very sad, and given the popularity of the show it’s a really bad omen of what’s to come. | |

| I can’t tell if this is supposed to be a joke. Assuming it’s not, the bad news was the announcement (all over this page and in this very thread) about the closing notice for “Ain’t Too Proud.” | |

| Looking at January - I checked two random dates - Tuesday January 11, and Friday January 14. There are very very few tickets sold for these performances. yes - there are Covid issues. But there is no advance in January. That's why you close. |

| I can't remember a year when several shows did not announce their closing dates within the first few weeks of January. These are shows that simply don't have the ticket-sales to get them through the winter, when numbers are traditionally down. I just heard that "Ain't Too Proud" is closing, though I don't know if that musical fits the OP's description as being a very popular hit show. Predicting that several shows (including some older big hits) might be closing sometime in January is like predicting we might have snow sometime in January; it's inevitable. | |

| If so, that doesn't come as a shock to me, though it's still obviously sad & disheartening to hear about any show closing in today's climate. | |

| And to answer the question below, it's my understanding that it's closing because of the overall uncertainty of whether a performance would need to be canceled from the perspective of both the show's employees and its audiences, the amount of money it's costing to stay open, and the bleak prospects as we hit the "normal" winter doldrums. Still and all, this show brought quite a bit of joy who most who saw it and it's unfortunate on multiple levels. |

|
| Are they closing due to their own internal problems with illness amongst cast and crew, unpredictability of audience attendance causing financial strain or a combo of all of the above? Wondering how different shows are having different protocols or, are they all following Equity guidelines with an opportunity to add additional layers if the producers require it? |

| Really? Tell that to the Aladdin company, crew, and production staff. All of whom love performing and running the show, and receiving paychecks and benefits. The show has given pleasure to many, especially children. I wish them the longest run possible. Nothing less. | |

| Just funny how for years posters have come to this board talking about shows that should close up shop and move on. Now all of a sudden, it is a problem. Certainly didn't see such 'love' among the natives here for "Diana." So pick which way it's going to be and stick with it from here on out. And remember that. |

| It's always shown to be a problem. The comments here are similar to other threads in the past when someone says they would prefer a particular show close. | |

| I can only speak for myself, but most people didn't wish for Diana to close, only that it were more successful musical theater. You're conflating subjective critique of a production -- one of the main reasons we post here -- with some understood hope for closure. Most speculative discussion about Diana's fate was its likelihood to survive both poor reviews and exposure on Netflix. That's a nuanced debate about a late 2021 alignment of streaming platform performance and post-pandemic audience investment in new material. I wouldn't build a thesis on posting trends based on anything this fall, certainly not that show's unique history and pre-opening (and almost universally negative) reception in another medium, perhaps a first for Broadway. | |

| It means that if a "popular show" is going to close, Aladdin would be my choice. I can't imagine it's been doing well at the box office, especially starting in January. | |

| So you're specifically wishing that all the employees of Aladdin lose their jobs over the holidays? I know it's going to happen to one company regardless, but isn't it a bit cruel to be wishing for any particular show? | |

| I'm not betting on the horses the way you seem to delight in. I think it's a shame that yet another show has to close. And what exactly is "a show like" Hadestown, as opposed to specifically Aladdin? | |

| When did I ever say I'm taking delight in a show closing? The poster said a show is going to close! I did not create the thread saying I hope a big Broadway hit will close. My point is if a show is closing, I'd prefer that a best Tony award winning and artistically fulfilling show like Hadestown not close compared to a Disney show like Aladdin. Is that so crazy? | |

| In a precarious moment for Broadway when every show is precious to the industry and everyone employed, you created a Sophie's Choice, and then made it. Respectfully, I'd argue that the backlash in the posts above was inevitable. | |
