I can't remember a year when several shows did not announce their closing dates within the first few weeks of January. These are shows that simply don't have the ticket-sales to get them through the winter, when numbers are traditionally down. I just heard that "Ain't Too Proud" is closing, though I don't know if that musical fits the OP's description as being a very popular hit show. Predicting that several shows (including some older big hits) might be closing sometime in January is like predicting we might have snow sometime in January; it's inevitable.
