No - it is not legally possible. And aside from this -- despite the glowing reviews -- no one really considers this new film "West Side Story". It is a different "animal" and thankfully will never replace the exquisite original 1961 film! (just my 2 cents)

To me, both films of ''West Side Story'' are terrific interpretations and reflections of their times. I love both, and think they can co-exist just fine.

Spielberg says he made his version because he felt the story was important enough to be reintroduced to a new generation.

Nor does he believe his movie is the last word. Spielberg says he expects someone else will make another version in 20 years or so.

Great stories can hold up to various renditions. As the Baker's Wife sings in ''Into the Woods'': ''Is it always 'or'? Is it never 'and'?''
