At first I also liked The Cloisters setting - -but the more I thought about it the more ridiculous the reason Tony brought Maria there seemed. In the film, Tony states that he first saw the Cloisters as his bus to Jail was passing by it. Well, if you're driving by the Cloisters -- you can't really see the inside -- all you can see is the outside which isn't terribly revealing to what's on the inside. So why did Tony fall in love with the place from a quick passing glance of the OUTSIDE?

Like many other "improvements" -- the reasoning is false and completely unnecessary: i.e. Tony's whole backstory (unnecessary and actually detrimental), the long dull sequence of Riff getting the gun - just so it can be justified how Chino ends up with the gun at the end. (in both the stage version and the 1961 movie - no one ever questions HOW Chino gets the gun - it's just not important HOW he gets it!)

Just my 2 cents -- but worth really thinking about each "improvement"...
