The Lehman Trilogy Dec. 29th
Posted by: TheOtherOne 07:49 am EST 12/30/21

Deciding to see this while I still had the chance was the right move.

Aaron Krohn, Adam Godley's understudy, was on for him last night and gave an absolutely terrific performance. I don't know if he has gone on with regularity throughout the run, but the performance was seamless.

Musical understudies have deservedly been getting a lot of attention lately. In a play like this, with three actors carrying a three hour play, the demands are as strong if not stronger. No one gets an off-stage break.

I was sorry to see I would be missing Mr. Godley when I entered the theatre. I was thrilled to have seen Mr. Krohn when I left.

It is a highly satisfying, intelligent, elegant, moving night of theatre and so happy to have seen it on Broadway as opposed to the enormous Armory space. I'd go again but the pricing is too high!

I thought the Armory was the perfect place for this show. And the cast was excellent. I don't feel I need to see it anywhere else, but I'm glad more people are getting the opportunity.

During the performance last night I kept thinking it must have been wonderful in the Armory. I loved the surprising intimacy of the Nederlander (which I still think of as the Billy Rose), however, so that is not a complaint.

I would see it again if the NT screening were to shown somewhere, but I only rationalized shelling out so much for it because I have spent less on theatre in the past 21 months than I had at any time in my adult life -- allowing for inflation, that is.

And I don't doubt it was the best you saw in 2021, BroadwayTonyJ. It was superb.

I think the Armory is a horrible place to see a play unless you are willing to pay the higher prices. A cold, soulless venue. Having said that, I did see The Lehman Trilogy at the Armory and for some reason my reasonably priced seat turned out to be close to the stage.

I occasionally had some obstruction because I was sitting to the right of the metal framework of the set. But for the most part I enjoyed the great acting though the third act did not engage me as much as the other two acts.

I wasn’t planning on returning but I won the lottery for Saturday night so I will be seeing once again. I don’t know if the seat will be any good.

Two other shows I saw at the Park Armory were very good but I was fairly far from the stage which I hated: The Hairy Ape and Branagh’s Macbeth.

Congratulations! I'm glad you won the lottery. The Lehman Trilogy is such an incredible play. When I won the lottery for it back on Sat., 10/09/21, I was seated in D 25 in the left mezzanine. It was a good seat for that theater. Good luck and have a great New Year!

I'll respond to your e-mail tomorrow morning and I will copy Lynn. I hope you had a good Christmas.

I am enjoying reading your comments, TheOtherOne. I'm glad you found it as thrilling a play as I did. Full disclosure: I entered the lottery for The Lehman Trilogy. At first, I was told that I had lost so I purchased a full-price ticket. Then I was sent an e-mail saying that one of the winners had declined so I ended up winning after all. The box office congratulated me and issued me a credit for my purchase.

I had a nice, extended conversation with Adrian Lester in front of the theater after the show. I told him I enjoyed his performance in Company when I was in London in '96 and also was able to see him in The Tragedy of Hamlet at Chicago Shakespeare some years later. We had a very nice chat.

Now I want a chance to see a screening of Andrew Scott in “Present Laughter.”

I saw the NT screening of Present Laughter in a theater. It was a total delight. I would like to see their recording of All My Sons.

I've loved Andrew Scott in so much, but I felt like that production of Present Laughter started at 11 and had nowhere else to go—everything was equally OTT.

THE LEHMAN TRILOGY and My Other Top Picks of 2021

In reply to: re: The Lehman Trilogy Dec. 29th - Ann 02:24 pm EST 12/30/21

The Lehman Trilogy was the best new play I saw this season. Pass Over and Lackawanna Blues were worthy contenders.

Kimberly Akimbo was easily the best new musical for me. I also thoroughly enjoyed Six and thought Mrs. Doubtfire very funny and a must-see for Rob McClure's bravura performance.

Morning's at Seven is my choice for the best revival of a play. My choices for best musical revival would be a tie between Assassins and Caroline, Or Change.

Honorary mention of shows not in a specific category: Waitress with Sara Bareilles, Little Shop of Horrors with Jeremy Jordan, and Laura Benanti at 54 Below.
