Because diction and projection are only 2 of the many components that go into an actor’s performance. An actor can be grounded and in the moment. They can be listening and responding believably in the scene. They can have a great grasp of the character, and portray them with layers and subtlety. They can play the intention of the scene, connect with the other actors, etc. All while having less-than-stellar diction.

I also found her difficult to understand when the play began. It’s a little perplexing considering she’s the highly-experienced veteran stage actor in that cast. But I agree that her performance was otherwise very strong. And in any case, I got used to it after a while, and was able to understand her much better as the play progressed.

Too bad about the whole Cosby thing. What a bizarre, misguided, harmful take. I’ve really lost all respect for her as a person since then.
