It just goes to show that even back in the time of "The Music Man" there were dance crazes and songs that were just meant to be fun and silly and give people an excuse to let loose. Kind of like their version of "The Monster Mash" or "The Twist". Plus it gives Harold and Marian a chance to dance together and for Harold to bring a bit of "fancy" city-sophistication in his moves to the "plain" small-town folks, already used in a way in the show "Plain and Fancy". I remember loving the song and Buddy Hackett's rendition when my folks played the record when I was a kid. Plus the film has really terrific Onna White choreography, almost as good as the superb "Marian the Librarian" staging. Based on the little clip of the new production available, it looks like the choreographer is taking advantage of that music in "Shipoopi" for Hill and Marian.
