Darren Criss closed out 2021 with a knockout New Year's Eve concert with the San Francisco Symphony, led by Bruce Anthony Kiesling.

Many of the Broadway and TV star's selections came from his CD ''A Very Darren Criss-mas,'' a merry mix of classics (like ''Happy Holidays'' and ''The Christmas Song'') and nontraditional seasonal songs (like Joni Mitchell's ''River''). Criss, a consummate performer and delightfully self-deprecating raconteur, reminisced about ''Glee'' a little and delivered a couple of his own toe-tapping tunes (such as ''Christmas Dance'').

Among the night's highlights was Criss crooning ''Welcome Home,'' a beautiful gem from ''Fanny,'' Harold Rome's 1954 musical. Criss says when he was 10, doing a San Francisco revival of ''Fanny'' (at 42nd Street Moon) was his first gig, so that score always has held a special place in his heart.

Criss, accompanying himself on guitar, closed with an exquisite, unmiked mashup of ''(If you're going to) San Francisco'' and ''Auld Lang Syne.''

Criss returns to Broadway in David Mamet's ''American Buffalo'' this spring with Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell.

But having seen him in ''How to Succeed'' and ''Hedwig,'' I can't wait to see Criss originate a role in a new musical someday.
