I wonder if they’ll be paid anything during hiatus.

Of course not. Cast and crew were asked to put their health at risk to work through Omicron for the past two weeks, now they're all being fired with the promise if being re-hired when the show reopens... which I'm gonna put those odds at even.

"Fired?"

When a show closes, I don't think of its employees as being "fired," and likewise when a show closes down with intention to reopen.

"Kevin McCollum, a veteran Broadway producer whose previous credits include “Rent” and “Avenue Q,” said he would close the musical comedy beginning Jan. 10, with a plan to reopen on March 14. The move will cost 115 people their jobs for that period; McCollum said he is committed to rehiring those who want to return.

“My job is to protect the jobs long-term of those who are working on ‘Mrs. Doubtfire,’ and this is the best way I can do that today,” he said in an interview. “I can’t just sit idly by when there’s a solution, albeit unprecedented and painful. I can’t guarantee anything, but at this moment this is the most prudent thing I can do with the tools I have.”

How does this affect Equity medical insurance?

Don't you have to have a certain number of work-weeks to be eligible? And to get unemployment, don't you have to have worked a certain number of weeks -- like six months in the previous year -- to be eligible for unemployment?

If there's a problem with their union insurance, hopefully there's a way for them to get Medicaid, which actually offers some good insurance including dental coverage, or otherwise low-cost insurance from Obamacare if they meet income requirements, which might take into consideration a drop in monthly income from unemployment. Check out the Actors Fund website which gives like weekly on-line now seminars on health insurance.

I read that they will not get paid.
However, if they want to return to
the show when it reopens in March,
they will be re-hired.

CDC and NIH expect an increase in covid nationwide over the next 3 weeks because of holiday travel, which they chose not to condemn. Even if theaters switched to requiring N95's for all cast and audience, and proof of vaccination and current booster on entry, and (like air travel in Europe) a negative covid test within 24 hours of entry - do they expect all this to be in place on March 15? Current game plan spreads the virus among cast and crew and audience. It seems like the idea is to infect the entire cast and crew, in the hope that no one will get sick again until the virus mutates again. All 4 people in my office wear N95's and have current boosters, and all of us came down with covid. What could possibly go wrong?
