Decades ago, non-hit shows used to take these "hiatuses" during the summer months, which were then the slow time on Broadway, with the announcement that they would re-open in the fall. The "re-opening in the fall" almost never happened. In the minority of times when it did happen, the return would only be for a week or two. To answer a question from a poster below, I guess the advantage of "stalling" the closing announcement is that you get to wait a while to see if the advance sale picks up. But does that ever happen, while a show is on "hiatus"?
