HEX at the National will end its run without a press night and live broadcast
Posted by: BillyD 10:17 am EST 01/06/22

HEX ends its run Jan. 22, as planned, having lost several performances to COVID. The live broadcast is canceled.

Smart move. The reviews would have been brutal. They never decided what story they wanted to tell. Scenes and lyrics bring unintended laughs. They spent lavishly on the physical production, maybe to cover the holes.

They say it's coming back in November. I doubt it.

I don't know. If the artistic director went to the pains of making the announcement then maybe it IS returning? I didn't see it but I did see wonder.land (was that its name?). That one's charms eluded me, as well. Another Rufus Norris creation.

After three rather glorious regimes under Eyre, Nunn and Norris, the current vibe- or the vibe two years ago when I last attended- seems less consistently great. Of course he's been battling challenges that those other three never had to deal with. Hopefully as COVID recedes, the programming will improve. (I'm rather excited about Nicola Walker in The Corn is Green.)

Regardless of momentary slumps, the NT is still the best theatre in the world :).

"They say it's coming back in November. I doubt it."

So do I, but I suppose 11 months is long enough to throw out the score and replace it with a better one (that's a very low bar) by other people.

(No I didn't see it. The performance I'd booked for was cancelled. There is an album, I have heard it, and... yikes.)
