| but it closed out of town. I don't know if anyone has ever thought of making an opera or musical of his wonderful "The Last Picture Show" although it is so perfect, a musicalization might by necessity of time and financial constraints mean getting rid of some of the many interesting characters. I doubt if anyone could musicalize "What's Up, Doc?" since the only real musical made of a farce that succeeded is "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum"; though it might be really interesting if Julie Taymor could somehow, like she wonderfully did the stampede in "The Lion King", figure out a way to make the chase of the protagonists, partially inside the Chinese dragon on the hills of San Francisco and its dealing with a huge pane of glass, somehow make it onto the lyrical stage! Just imagining that is fun! Of course, Mr. Bogdanovich did try and have a big miss with his Cole Porter musical film "At Long Last Love", but he did later do the movie version of the play "Noises Off" plus "Mask" with Cher (a success) and some other films after his great films in the 1970s. He also appeared as an actor on "The Sopranos" and on a recent podcast associated with TCM. Rest in peace. |
