Maybe you are not missing anything at all.
Perhaps your dislike stems from the fact that you did not experience any connection with the characters, and their struggles.
No fault there.
Two and half hours with people you have no connection with can be brutal.

It is a difficult show.
I found it very hard to care for the characters, and their situations, as presented.
Where was the sense of fun, or adventure?

The NPR interview with the creators seems at a vast disconnect from what I witnessed on stage.

I was bored most of the time.
And that is the worst thing to be in the theatre.

I don't think you missed anything.
