Golden globe for tick tick boom and west side story.

I wonder if they will accept the award. It might be a career killer in this cancel culture world.

Ariana DeBose and Mike Faist also runners-up at the National Society of Film Critics

The National Society of Film Critics is one of the big critics' groups, and they gave out their awards a few days ago. They heavily went for foreign-language films this year (Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and 3 of the four acting awards) and didn't give any 1st place awards to any musicals. But Ariana DeBose came in 2nd for Supporting Actress and Mike Faist tied for 3rd for Supporting Actor.

Ariana DeBose is very likely to get an Oscar nomination, and she could well win. Mike Faist has an uphill battle to get a nomination, but it's a possibility. Four of the five slots seem to be spoken for in his category, but the fifth slot could go to a bunch of different people, including him.

I also wanted to mention that all of the "musical or comedy" awards went to musicals (West Side Story or Tick Tick Boom) with a shutout on the comedy side. That doesn't happen that often.

The winner for Animated Film, Encanto, is also a musical, but I think most of the winners in that category have songs.

What exactly is the point of even doing the Golden Globes at all, with all the controversy?

So that the HFP members can continue to get free tickets, merch, and junkets?

No doubt the Hollywood Foreign Press wanted to prove its continued revelance to the movie awards season.

At the same time, it sounded like many publicists boycotted the Globes, so I imagine the HFPA's access to screenings and stars was limited.

That said, the Globes reportedly added 21 new members to beef up the diversity of their membership (and revamped its ethics rules).

And for what it's worth, a number of the Globe winners were diverse: Will Smith, Ariana DeBose, Rachel Zegler, MJ Rodriguez, O Yeong-su ...

I'm glad the Globes didn't skip this year. There was a bumper crop of movie musicals, and I'm happy a number of them were recognized.

I dunno, if i were in an eligible movie or tv show, or part of making one, this last year, I'd sure as hell want them to go forward. A lot of worthy things get nominated and win at the Globes, getting deserved recognition and attention, that often don't at the Oscars or the Emmys. Both of which are quite problematic in their own, as is everything basically. Not to dismiss the issues, but you can find these issues at play and systemically in the history and nominating bodies of almost all entertainment awards.

And even if it is going through a very big crisis of identity as an awards show and even though it's seen as problematic, there is a limited power for that and a shelf-life, i think, for how relevant that will be. Cancelling the actual ceremony is a big deal. But I, for one, am glad they're still giving the awards out.

The Oscars didn't stop meaning something, let alone stop being given out, when #OscarsSoWhite was coming for it hard, or the years after that started when the nominations got even less diverse than before, if I remember correctly.

It's much much less likely that Garfield will win Best Actor at the oscars for Tick Tick Boom, but I'm glad he got to win it from the Globes tonight.

I think it's nearly impossible that Rachel Zegler will win Best Actress at the Oscars, I'm glad she won a GG tonight.

I'm thrilled ''West Side Story'' won 3 Golden Globes, but I gotta twit whoever was running the Golden Globes Twitter account last night.

In announcing its win for Best Comedy/Musical, it read: ''If laughter is the best medicine, 'West Side Story' has the cure for what ails you.''

Who knew a musical about warring gangs was a laugh riot? The tweet was later amended to: ''If music is the best medicine ...''
