| It was a pretty easy question if you are at all familiar with Merman. The part in the clue about how long the shows ran seems completely irrelevant. | |

| I’m guessing from some of the discussion below that it is Annie (Annie and Annie get your gun). But I probably would have initially guessed winifred because of once upon a mattress—but merman didn’t have that name. | |

| I, too, initially came up with Winifred, hoping there was another musical with a lead named Winifred that Merman played. | |

| No Freds, but she’s the only “Nails” in Broadway history! Also: Kate, Wanda, Reno, Jeanette, May/Madame du Barry, Hattie, Blossom, Sally, Liz, Rose, and Dolly—and the character in the Jeopardy Finale. Laura, avoiding work while looking up the Merm |

| It was worded in such a way that you would think they each were in two shows playing characters with the same first name. I figured out what they were going for but can understand why the contestants might have been confused. | |

| I thought the very same thing. Usually Jeopardy! is much more judicious with their phrasing and clarity. | |

| It was a little unfair question for all of the contestants in that while Ethel Merman famously debuted the role of Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun" on Broadway, Sarah Jessica Parker was one in line of young girls who played "Annie", who later got famous. Andrea McArdle's the one who got famous for "Annie", not Parker really, and I think if they used Andrea's name instead of Parker's for the clue, it would have been an easier, but fairer, question. | |

| Except that most J! players have little aptitude for theater clues, as the responses of "Mary" and "Melissa" suggest. Amy at least touched on a famous role for one of them with "Rose." SJP is far more famous than Andrea McArdle, including biographical facts, so I think the clue is fair as is. There are certainly ways it could have been rewritten. I don't think the second "2" is necessary for instance. And "hit show" might have been better than "show that ran for 2 years." |

| SJP is far more famous than Andrea McArdle Indisputably so... but her fame does not rest on her childhood stage performance. I'll bet most of her fans outside of this forum couldn't name even one of her stage roles. Merman's fame, on the other hand, rests largely on theatre (and that scene in Airplane! ;) |

| That's a fair point, but her biography is only one way to approach it. People should know Merman's most famous roles are Rose and Annie, and thinking Annie could lead to the show named Annie and the hunch - if you didn't already know - that SJP might have appeared in it. I imagine that's the way the writers expected it to work for most players. I happen to have seen SJP back in 79 or 80, so that helped, but I'm pretty sure I would have got it anyway...:) |

| I got the answer (in less than 30 seconds) in exactly the way you describe. Knew Merman did Annie, don't know any SJP roles. | |

| The final question is posted daily in an ad for "Jeopardy" in The NY Times. That gives me all day to think of the answer. It was weirdly written but what helped me is that I had seen Sarah Jessica Parker as Annie ( Betty Hutton was her Miss Hannigan ). Amy's answer of "Rose" was almost correct: Merman was Rose in "Gypsy" and SJP was Rosemary in "How To Succeed In Business...". |

| I wonder if that's why the clue had the unhelpful "show that ran more than 2 years" instead of "hit show," to avoid the argument that Rosemary and Rose are too close not to count. That revival of H2S ran a little over a year. Sorry, I see that dottie20 has said basically the same thing. Referring to "title roles" would have worked to avoid it too. |

| I thought the same thing. Upon further investigation, I see that the original production of Gypsy ran for less than 2 years, as did the revival of How to Succeed with SJP. I guess that's why they specified 2 years in the phrasing. | |

| That was the pairing I thought of; perhaps instead of “2 years”, they could have referenced the characters’ names being titular. | |

| I thought the question was oddly worded. I, too, saw SJP as Annie (twice), and Alice Ghostley was Miss Hannigan. I have a picture of the two of us from back then, if I could only find it! | |
