| Not sure what's so sinister or surprising about it. Mockingbird is moving to a smaller theater (the Belasco, where North Country is), while North Country, which had closed off the balcony section in recent weeks, is similarly moving to a smaller theater TBD. (I imagine this is so the Britney Spears jukebox musical or some other splashy show can take the Shubert.) As far as why they haven't 'put a better story out there', I'm guessing that's because.. they don't know which theater yet?? How many shows every season announce they're coming in without a concrete house (this year alone, that group includes the Audra McDonald "Ohio State Murders" and "A Strange Loop", and the return of "American Utopia" had tickets on sale for a year and a half without announcing which theater they were moving into. ("King Lear" with Glenda Jackson did something similar a few years back, if I recall.) And perhaps you haven't heard, but things in the entertainment industry, and for that matter the world in general, are a bit... fluid right now. Even more than usual. My guess is that North Country will "return" to whichever theater it eventually winds up "in". |

| What's surprising about is that there is generally a process of decorum by which shows who are vacating a theater have the chance to put their narrative out there - which is, of course, the purpose of PR - before the shows who are taking over that theater announce that they are moving in. But ryhog gave us actually useful intel as to why this was bungled in the way that it was. What's clear is that they had a very tiny window to try and put together a face-saving explanation. As for the story they're asking us to support, I have some credibility gaps. They were only selling through April 24, 2022 to begin with, and there are only a few Broadway houses that are significantly smaller than the Belasco, so if their trouble selling the show predated Omicron, it doesn't seem to be worth the economic impact of loading into a new theater (really, their only option for a smaller theater in the spring would be the Golden... which maybe will happen). Of the examples you cite, "Strange Loop" has announced a theater, and the shows that were selling tickets without a theater in place, or who sold tickets and then moved, were still selling tickets, whereas "North Country" is refunding all of the tickets. You're right, we are in a weird place. We returned to the old producing model hastily, and shows are scrambling under the weight of this variant to find a way forward. Looking at ticket sales for most shows this month is downright depressing: so many big plays and musicals have advance sales of a few hundred tickets each night. That's why this idea of moving into a new theater strikes me as the same thing as a show "closing to tour". I didn't say it was sinister, just noticeable in its sloppiness. |

| First, I think the idea that North Country is coming back "in the spring" [if at all] is far-fetched. Second, even if we come back from Omicron in the most optimistic way possible, the spring is going nonetheless have a ton of pain. I still think we are going to see more closings, more hiatuses, etc., and real estate is not ever going to be tight. Third, I doubt TKAM is moving volitionally or, if it is, because its producer is involved in what will follow. (And, if one is hungry for something sinister, this may be where it lurks, but I am not going there.) Fourth, GFTNC is pretty clearly NOT making a volitional move. (I can see why Mockingbird might want to downsize and also why they might not want any of the other downsized alternatives, but I can't envision why North Country would, and I can't fathom where it might get the money to do so.) Fifth, I very much sign on to the close to tour analogy. | |
