| Cinco Paul, who co-created the series with Ken Daurio, has said that ''Schmigadoon!'' originally was supposed to be 8 episodes long, but Apple would greenlight only 6. As a result, the show had to cut down the plot and shorten the arcs of certain characters. That said, it's still a miracle it got made. Where else were you gonna see a parody of Golden Age musicals starring so many Tony winners, including Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short and Aaron Tveit, alongside Ariana DeBose and Ann Harada? With dances by Tony winner Christopher Gattelli. I'm assuming ''Schmigadoon!'' was no ratings blockbuster, but I hope the music branch of the Emmys remembers to nominate one or two of Paul's toe-tapping songs. I fondly recall the season's touching finale, ''How We Change,'' and I loved DeBose teaching her classroom of kids ''With All of My Heart.'' And if I had to submit only one song, I'd go with ''Cross That Bridge,'' the series' salute to Frank Loesser's gospel-sounding showstoppers. Just out of curiosity, I checked Paul's Twitter to see what he's doing next. And he's got a new musical, ''A.D. 16,'' making its world premiere (Feb. 4-March 6) at the Olney Theatre Center in Olney, Md. It's a musical comedy about a teenaged Mary Magdalene (played by Phoenix Best) who ''falls in love with the carpenter's song next-door, who happens to be a kid named Jesus'' (played by Ben Fankhauser of ''Newsies''). | ... must be so blind to talent and accomplishment that it calls into question all of its credibility! It borders on treason! Treason! Traitors - to the thespian and cinematic art! I hope the committee holds a dance so I can go and challenge them to a private rumble ... weapons: popcorn and film clips, theirs against mine! I will start with the exquisite "Scherzo" Zegler does, the morning after the balcony scene, then follow with a swift upper "One Hand One Heart"! Take THAT, SAG committee! SAG? You certainly will!!! Are you actually broadcasting your pathetic awards ceremony?? I for one will not be watching - To quote Oscar Jaffee, "I close the iron door!!!!!!" |

| There's actually no SAG Awards "committee" that does the nominating. Each year a few thousand members of the union are chosen randomly, and the results of their submitted choices are tabulated. For the voting for the winners, all members can participate. So, I doubt that the nominating folks who are scattered all over the country will be getting together for a dance, making it rather impossible for a rumble, justified though it might be. | |

| They're scattered all over the country? It's worse than I thought! Round them up and stop them from ever being selected again! But seriously ... in that case, it really does make me wonder how many of them have actually seen the movie, to be able to judge, or if it skews results towards streamed releases easily seen on the TV at home. |

| If I understand it correctly, SAG picked about 2,000 members across the country as nominators, and this year, I actually knew one. He tells me he loved ''West Side Story'' and voted it for Best Ensemble, and was shocked it wasn't one of the nominees. As a few journalists have reported since the announcement, it appears ''West Side Story'' had a screener issue. Before the SAG nominations came out, I heard some griping online about how ''West Side Story'' didn't send out physical screeners. I don't know if it was for economic reasons (to save money) or artistic ones (to encourage SAG members to see it on the big screen). At any rate, SAG nominators also had the option of seeing it digitally online. My SAG-nominator friend noted that all 5 of the SAG Ensemble nominees sent out physical screeners. Who knows? It's also possible that the SAG nominators were more attracted by the bigger names in ''Don't Look Up'' (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep) and ''House of Gucci'' (Lady Gaga, Al Pacino). Whereas ''West Side Story'' has terrific talent in it, but Ansel Elgort aside, they're largely unknown (Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, Mike Faist, David Alvarez). A shame because I still think ''West Side Story'' should've been nominated AND won SAG Ensemble. What a diverse and dazzling group of triple threats, who sang, acted and danced their hearts out. |

| I’m in the WGA, and we didn’t receive WSS screeners - and I’ll be voting for Kushner’s work - yet we just got the Coen Scottish Play, an odd adaptation to expect award recognition from writers. I get the big screen preference but - hardly the first to note this - I believe WSS will face losses as a result. | |

| Thanks, Delvino, for voting for Kushner's work. I really thought his work was so substantial and important to Spielberg's new vision. As a writer yourself, you probably realize that the screenplays to musicals are historically underrated and overlooked. In fact, the 1961 movie of ''West Side Story'' won 10 of its 11 Oscars, and the only one it lost was Adapted Screenplay. And the last screenplay to a movie musical to win an Academy Award is ''Gigi'' (1958). Speaking of the WGA, they used to give a prize for Best Written Musical, from 1949-1969. Another relic of another time. |

| I've seen the new West Side Story twice and do like it overall but it is very controversial among various members of the Latino community that I know and who are members of my family. A lot of them really hate it because they feel it lacks authenticity. I posted about this earlier today in response to another poster's rave below. | |
