New York City Center 2022 Encores! Season
opens with The Tap Dance Kid, Feb 2 - 6

Lear deBessonet embarks on first season as Artistic Director
with Music Director Rob Berman and Producing Creative Director Clint Ramos

Tickets start at $35

New York City Center's 2022 Encores! Season opens February 2 - 6 with The Tap Dance Kid-music by Henry Krieger, lyrics by Robert Lorick, and book by Charles Blackwell. The season, which also includes The Life (Mar 16 - 20) and Into the Woods (May 4 - 15), launches Lear deBessonet's first as Encores! Artistic Director, alongside Encores! Music Director Rob Berman and Encores! Producing Creative Director Clint Ramos. The beloved, Tony-honored Encores! series, which has celebrated the tradition of American musical theater with semi-staged productions of rarely seen musicals for nearly three decades, returns with a broader embrace to this mission as the next chapter of its evolution.

About The Tap Dance Kid

In 1950s New York, a young Black boy named Willie (Alexander Bello) dreams of being a tap dancer like his uncle (Trevor Jackson) and grandfather (DeWitt Fleming Jr.) before him. But his father William (Joshua Henry), a prominent lawyer and civil rights champion, has different goals for his son-and no time for his whip-smart daughter (Shahadi Wright Joseph), who craves his affirmation. A blend of musical romance, coming-of-age story, and family drama, this rarely revived gem is directed by Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun) and features new tap sequences by choreographer Jared Grimes (After Midnight) and a concert adaptation by Lydia R. Diamond (Stick Fly). Broadway's Joseph Joubert (Caroline, or Change) will guest music direct The Tap Dance Kid.

The cast features Tracee Beazer as Carole, Alexander Bello as Willie, DeWitt Fleming Jr. as Daddy Bates, Joshua Henry as William, Trevor Jackson as Uncle Dipsey, Shahadi Wright Joseph as Emma, Chance Smith as Winslow, and Adrienne Walker as Ginnie. With Brinae Ali, Kurt Csolak, Aniya Danée, Zachary Downer, Francine Espiritu, Izaiah Montaque Harris, Madison Hilligoss, Ben Lanham, John Manzari, Jodeci Milhouse, Dario Natarelli, Janelle Neal, Justin Prescott, and Bethany Tesarck.

About New York City Center Encores!

New York City Center Encores! built its nearly 30-year reputation as a showcase of American musical theater revivals of lesser-known and rarely produced gems from the Broadway canon. These semi-staged productions feature today's Broadway stars accompanied on stage by the world-class Encores! Orchestra-but only for a limited run of performances. Now under the leadership of Encores! Artistic Director Lear deBessonet, Encores! Music Director Rob Berman, and Encores! Creative Producing Director Clint Ramos, the future of the series explores hidden gems of the musical theater canon, productions reclaimed for contemporary times through an artist's personal lens, and celebrations of beloved classic musicals and the way theater connects us all.

Encores! single tickets, starting at $35, can be purchased online at NYCityCenter.org, by calling 212.581.1212, or at the City Center Box Office. New York City Center is located at 131 W 55th St between Sixth and Seventh avenues. Select $25 seats are available to those who join Access City Center Club, which provides exclusive ticket offers to select performances for those 35 and under.
