| In a season that's noted for the remarkable quality of covers, the Innvar take-over at Mockingbird deserves a niche place. One of the star slots on Broadways since the fall of 2018, this show has proven a draw based on synergy of material -- the title alone -- and star . It's all the more gratifying to report how powerful the play and production are with a fine actor giving a stunningly good, in every way nuanced and accomplished performance. Innvar's Atticus is gentle and even vulnerable, yet capable of bursts of anger, recalibrated when Finch recognizes what he inadvertently unleashed (the Mayella cross examination). Innvar isn't afraid to show us the impotence and inconclusiveness in Atticus's sometimes facile reasoning, and his quietest moments -- like his brief scene with Dill -- reveal an entirely different color in this almost too-known American figure. Sorkin's recomposed him, as everyone knows, but without a star turn to appraise, we see only the character. And Innvar's attractive presence adds something new: a genuine charisma that's incrementally revealed during the entire performance. We don't expect it, and so his big act 2 courtroom performance packs a double punch. Independent of the earned discussion of understudy heroism on Broadway this complicated season, Innvar's glory is good for To Kill a Mockingbird. This new iteration looks to work well with (merely) great actors replacing star casting. It's far from a vehicle -- arguably, Scout is still the protagonist in some ways -- but Finch is that above-the-title role that will attract men 45-75 forever. Good for Sorkin, Lee -- and let's pause to add -- a treasure of a Broadway vet, Christopher Innvar. This is at least the fourth production I've seen him in, and I would add him to the short list of MVPs, this season or any other. |

| Why has Kinnear been out? Covid? (I thought I read that but google brings up so much other stuff I can't be sure my mind isn't misremembering.) | |

| His absence isn't discussed at the box office, but it's the logical explanation. Five covers went on yesterday, including the brilliant Tom Robinson of Yaegel T. Welch. This company has expertly managed the understudy crunch, but they can't lose a star comfortably. Yet a separate topic: Is Greg Kinnear box office? Asking, not surmising one way or another. But I would've imagined Richard Thomas the more logical next NYC star, an actor with many stage credits and Broadway street cred. Kinnear has zero stage credits in his Playbill bio, and seems to be starting on Broadway -- heavy lifting, first time out. Clearly, decisions were made with a calculation: the play is *also* the star. True before Covid; now, star power seems required. We'll see about June. Maybe a summer launch -- his third -- will be magic for poor Kinnear. |

| I was thinking the same thing that Thomas would be more of a draw but I guess they need a star on the road. I don't think Kinear will bring much box office at all. His film career has really slowed down in recent years and he was never much of a draw to begin with. I guess pre-covid they thought he was known enough to keep the big hit going. Now as you say I'm not so sure. |
