London calling: for Bonnie and Clyde?
Posted by: Delvino 08:14 pm EST 01/18/22

So the concert version that just played is moving to the West End in April? What inspired this? I just read a glowing "review" over at That Site and find it a bizarre choice for a UK premiere in today's climate. The show didn't work here for almost everyone. Osnes was announced for the London concert, but was unavailable or had her casting rescinded based on her anti-vax status? I knew she had been denied work in a concert, but didn't follow Bonnie and Clyde. Separate subject but far from OT: is she hirable?

Is the story of Bonnie & Clyde well known in London? Curious. The Wildhorn show's a bit of a joke to me, at least if you even vaguely know the true story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. At best it's a Wikipedia-level study of the people, at worst, well, if you went in to the show not knowing anything about the two, you'd come out of it knowing less.

(Not that the show needs to be a documentary but, well, it could at least have SOME hint of truth or understanding to it.)

years ago i got to see at York theater a reading of this musical that Hunter Foster was partially responsible for. Even in this meager threadbare staging the audience and I found it a complete delight and very melodic. IMHO a bter score than broadway's version

Has this to be forever banished because Wildhorn got his on first ? Is this another case like the alternate Phantom ?

I saw readings of the Hunter Foster BONNIE & CLYDE several times over the years and can also attest to its excellence. In at least one--probably more--Marc Kudisch was a very funny J. Edgar Hoover(occasionally in drag). Foster's sister was Bonnie in at least one of the later readings. Rachel Coloff--always a terrific perfomer--was often Blanche.
I agree that if it is no more, it is very much a shame. At least Yeston's PHANTOM gets produced everywhere but Broadway.

ironically, I did see a staging of Wildhorn's BONNIE several years ago in Chicago and recall very little about it.

I believe it's had a decent life in the regions here. I don't know if the show that has been playing has changed.

''So the concert version that just played is moving to the West End in April? What inspired this?''

Jeremy Jordan reprised his Broadway role in ''Bonnie & Clyde'' at a concert version Monday night at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Tickets reportedly sold out in a matter of minutes, and a second show was added. Initially, it was a reunion for Jordan and his Tony-nominated co-star, Laura Osnes, but in the wake of her anti-vax controversy, Olivier nominee Frances Mayli McCann took over as Bonnie. Based on the raves and remarks I've seen at theatreboard.co.uk, it sounds like it was a success, and fans gave it an enthusiastic welcome. And the show's creators - Frank Wildhorn, Don Black and Ivan Menchell - were in the audience, and must've been thrilled to see ''Bonnie & Clyde'' live again, a decade after its short stay on Broadway.

I, for one, loved ''Bonnie & Clyde's'' country-pop score, which includes melodic and moving tunes, like ''How 'Bout a Dance,'' ''Dyin' Ain't So Bad'' and ''You Love Who You Love.'' And the original cast, which also included Claybourne Elder and Melissa Van Der Schyff, was a knockout. But obviously mine was a minority opinion. It closed after 33 previews and 36 performances, earning two Tony nominations (for Osnes and the score) and clearing the way for Jordan to headline in Disney's ''Newsies.'' Since 2011, ''Bonnie & Clyde'' apparently has gained some popularity as a cult musical; it's been produced in Japan and South Korea, as well as all over Europe (in Ireland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium, Sweden, etc.).

At the end of Tuesday's concert, it was announced that the show will move to the West End's Arts Theatre (no word yet on casting).

Meantime, I was happy to hear that these London concerts were filmed and will be streamed at a later date.

Due to the dedicated fans of ''Bonnie & Clyde,'' it appears, to quote one of its song titles, that ''This World Will Remember Us.''

Fan here too, Wayman.
My husband and I saw this on Broadway ( though we see primarily off-Broadway when in NYC) and we were very happy we had selected this musical for one of our "slots".

I find it interesting that this show (which I panned at its world premiere production at La Jolla Playhouse) continues to have a life. Ms. Osnes was paired with Stark Sand, unhappily, in that production. See my TB Regional review in the link below.

Apparently, your colleagues had a higher opinion of that La Jolla Playhouse production. At its 2009 awards, the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle gave ''Bonnie & Clyde'' 5 Craig Noel prizes: Outstanding New Musical; Jeff Calhoun, Outstanding Director of a Musical; John McDaniel, Outstanding Musical Direction; Laura Osnes, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical, and Melissa Van Der Schyff, Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical.

I picked up a last minute ticket one night at TKTS (a great front ctr mezz seat) and enjoyed myself.

Confession: it's the only Wildhorn show I've seen.
