| And tagline. Maybe a bit cheesy (Broadway), but I think a great way of communicating the story of the show in a clear image and narrative frame. | |

| I'm sorry but this is one of the laziest design concepts for a poster for this musical that I could think of. It's really just his head with the 6 thought-actors in boxes in his head? I like the colors they chose, so that's something. But the design for the off-broadway production was far more interesting and compelling. I wonder why they dropped it. Are they trying to be more simple and clear while also not setting audiences up to be disappointed by the simple staging that is almost literally the 6 thought-actors in boxes, moving around Usher? Maybe they're afraid anything less literal will let broadway audiences come assuming there'll be some kind of "broadway" level set design? If I hadn't already seen this show to know how unique, interesting and brilliant it is... I would not have assumed it based on this. But I sure hope this visual marketing strategy sells tickets, this show deserves to be seen by a wide audience. And at least deserves to find its audience, whatever size it is, and get them into the the theater while it's running. |

| It does a few things well. It tells the audience how to watch the show by expressing which the characters are and how they relate (Usher and His Thoughts), and it expresses the idea that this is a play in some way about community. It’s also welcoming: where the original art is Usher gazing at his own navel which is a theater in which he’s gazing at his own navel etc. - and which suggests here is a show for theater insiders - it has Usher looking out, as if hopeful or at least engaged, which invites us into his experience. My only real critique is that the lettering only makes sense when the words are stacked on top of each other; out of context, the different sizes don’t make sense and aren’t visually appealing. Is it basic? Yes. But that’s Broadway. |

| I don't disagree with anything you're saying, all good points that I'm sure went into deciding to market it this way. And above all the art needs to help it sell tickets... the "Pulitzer Prize Winning" would sell the ticket to me no matter what the artwork looked like, and I'll never quite get why that wouldn't put it on everyone's must-see list, but that's me. The one thing i disagree with is that Broadway is basic in this sense. Not sure where you're drawing that from. A lot of incredible poster art that isn't basic has come from broadway musicals. Maybe some of the ones I hold in highest esteem didn't help the shows sell tickets as much as other imagery would have, it's hard to know... again, I am not a typical theatergoer I guess, in terms of marketing to sell out a broadway run. But... at the same time, Broadway runs on passionate "insiders" like myself AND tourists. Maybe this show is lucky because it already won a "must-see" making prize before arriving on Broadway... its artwork doesn't have to intrigue buyers like me anymore. |
