Although TMZ was told that Meat Loaf's wife and daughters were by his side when he died.
Is that doable with Covid?

So are multiple sources, including the NY Daily News. To those who say it’s irrelevant; it’s relevant. The last two years happened, Broadway has been financially challenged as never before by this pandemic, and even former stars who eschew vaccines and protocols are part of the cultural debate. An industry is heroically scrambling to survive; all players, past and present, are part of the story.

Meat Loaf in Hair

Huffington post and IMBD lists the Broadway production of Hair, but none of the tours. But I believe it's incorrect. I saw him in Hair at the National Theatre in DC. It was either the 2nd National or 4th (summer of 1971 likely, which makes it the 4th), which Ovrtur covers accurately. He was in both. I even saw him play Claude with (I believe) Charlotte Crossley, one of the original Midler Harlettes Can anyone verify that he did Hair in NYC? I don't trust the credit, since it leaves out Meat Loaf appearing in the two Hair tours, which I can prove. His theater credits on Ovrtur strike me as the most accurate, as they track with my anecdotal evidence.

That's a replica of the IBDB. I'm not convinced he played it in NYC, and on the road, in the same window. But I supposed it's possible. In general Ovrtur has the more precise casting info, complete with dates, and they have no record of his B'way appearance, as he's not listed in the Tribe or as replacements in the two roles he played on the road. But it's not a terribly important fact check -- he did the show twice on the road -- and we'll never know. I did see him as Claude, but I'm relatively sure it was as a cover (I was 19). Hair was famous for use of swings over the 8 shows a week.

Rockabye Hamlet

I saw Rockabye Hamlet. One of the moments seared into my brain that lingers there along with many other specific, highlighted memories from various productions over the years is the vision of Meat Loaf, wearing a huge cape that billowed and emphasized his bulk, walking down a long curved set of stairs against the rear of the set. For some reason that moment of excess (accompanied, as I recall, with some type of loud "rock" music") summarized the awfulness of that production. I still have the program and had secretly wished I could one day get Meat Loaf to sign it for me. I'm so glad he went on to other, more successful efforts.

BTW, while Meat Loaf was sometimes referred to as Mr. Loaf, Tiny Tim was always acknowledged in interviews as Mr. Tim. (You can see those interviews on Youtube.)

I saw him in a couple of plays in the 70s. One at the Public and the other in the park. He had a definite stage presence.

I don’t remember for which show, but I recall a John Simorn review in which he referred to “Mr. Loaf"

Actually I believe that was The NY Times, in a concert review. It wasn’t an attempt at snark, but simply a misplaced attempt at obeying the Times editorial style of referring to living people. I don’t have details at my fingertips. Perhaps someone else knows the specifics.

Actually it seems we’re both wrong, and this is a bit of an urban myth. The Q&A with a Times copy editor here discusses it (you have to scroll way down in the article to find the reference).

Seems “Mr. Loaf” was in a headline of a movie review by Stephen Holden, but it was phrased as a tongue-in-cheek question.

As fans of the rock singer Meat Loaf woke up Friday to news of his death, one small question — trivial, really, in the context of a grand career — surfaced again.

Did The Times really call him “Mr. Loaf” in its pages? Let us explain...
Link No, We Didn’t Call Him ‘Mr. Loaf.’ (Mostly.)
