Actually I believe that was The NY Times, in a concert review. It wasn’t an attempt at snark, but simply a misplaced attempt at obeying the Times editorial style of referring to living people. I don’t have details at my fingertips. Perhaps someone else knows the specifics.

Actually it seems we’re both wrong, and this is a bit of an urban myth. The Q&A with a Times copy editor here discusses it (you have to scroll way down in the article to find the reference).

Seems “Mr. Loaf” was in a headline of a movie review by Stephen Holden, but it was phrased as a tongue-in-cheek question.

As fans of the rock singer Meat Loaf woke up Friday to news of his death, one small question — trivial, really, in the context of a grand career — surfaced again.

Did The Times really call him “Mr. Loaf” in its pages? Let us explain...
