Virginia Repertory Theatre (Richmond, VA) is Envisioning a New Context for Ain’t Misbehavin’

[Desiree] Roots is assembling a team to reinterpret Ain’t Misbehavin’ – The Fats Waller Musical Show, which will be directed by VCU’s Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, Ph.D. Working with Richard Maltby, Jr, the original creator and director of the Broadway classic, they are assembling a team of BIPOC artists to explore a new interpretation of the musical that will lend more context to the script and the 1920s era it highlights.

“We plan to add more background information to topics such as minstrelsy, the form of entertainment associated with minstrel shows, featuring songs, dances, and comic routines based on stereotyped depictions of black Americans,” Roots said. “We have permission from the licensor, Music Theatre International, and the show’s creators to begin a creative process of reinterpretation.”

The rewrites and new ideas will be sent to the writers for approval, and then workshopped at Virginia Rep in 2022. Once approved, the newly envisioned version of the musical will be presented in the 2022-2023 Signature Season.
