It sounds to me the "new" version of the show will include living program notes. It could turn out to be a lecture with a show inside. I saw the show with the original cast on Broadway in the summer of 1978 and again when, what was probably a bus and truck version, came to Minneapolis. I loved it both times. One of the many highlights came late in the second act when the cast sang "Black and Blue." Up until then, the show was light hearted and fun, but with one song, everything changed. It made me reconsider what I saw and heard plus the show took on a depth. I didn't need to know anything about how and when the songs were first introduced. I could research this on my own, which I did.
I don't know how the show would play today? It great that BIPOC creatives are doing to produce it. I hope they don't dumb it down. |
