I remember seeing Ain't Misbehavin' on Broadway (after having seen it off-). When they sang "Black and Blue" (a heart-wrenching lament about racial oppression and pain), some audience members bizarrely tittered or even guffawed. They seemed to find the wordplay hilarious. This tone deaf response deeply offended the cast and creators and some of them spoke out about it at the time. A revision of the script could--for one thing--add more context and set up the song better so that wouldn't happen again. And hopefully theatergoers have gotten smarter and more sensitive.
