I did a deep dive into the term's origin story last year, in a debate tethered to very different issues. Yes, big surprise, an African-American word has been ripped from its original community and repurposed. It's not an oversimplification to say: it's been culturally appropriated to serve as a far more pejorative stand-in for the worn out "PC." We can all remember when "PC" was projected onto any revision, usually by cynics who felt works shouldn't be tampered with, ever. In fact, we never hear "PC" anymore, since "woke" is fueled by more outrage.
