I don’t want to say too much, but I think you’ll find it worth your time. The writers are mostly new to me, but their work is very assured. Bill T. Jones is firing on all cylinders here, and the band, the orchestrations, and the design are very impressive. It’s a lavish production with a very large cast by Off-Broadway standards, so my guess is they are aiming for a Broadway transfer. There are issues that I hope they can solve (including the show’s length), but with a cast that includes Brandon Victor Dixon, Ephraim Sykes, Lillias White, and Howard McGillin, it’s worth the attention of any serious fan of musical theatre. And the show catapults Tamika Lawrence into the group of performers who would make me decide to take a chance on a show I might otherwise be inclined to skip.
