| It may sound a bit hokey and melodramatic, but it wasn't when the novel was published in 1931 during the Harlem Renaissance. It is now considered a rediscovered and important work, indeed published as a Penguin Classic, and is taught in many African American literature courses across the country. I've not read enough about the production to have a good feel for how "period" it is--that might be a component to consider. We seem these days to expect all people and texts from the past to conform to "received" assumptions we experience in the present. |
