I don't suppose any of you saw it (it wasn't very good), but there was a recent film musical version of Cats where Ian McKellen was actually the best thing about it. I can't even tell you if he were a good singer or not, but for a couple of minutes while he sang, there was suddently a real character worth caring about on screen, and I was riveted. After the film I mentioned to my comrades that if only every scene had been as effective as McKellen's, it would have been an incredible movie. Considering Judi Dench didn't manage to pull it off, nor many other fine actors, it was quite a feat, sort of the movie equvalent of baking and icing a five-layer cake while underwater and holding one's breath (it was really not a very good film). |
