The depiction of New York is accurate (aside from its progressive racial fantasia)...
That's part of what I find confusing, the cafe scene between Denée Benton and Audra McDonald for instance. Maybe the show is drawing a distinction between the different classes within an African American professional class that existed in New York at the time in the way it's drawing a very accurate distinction between American Victorian style and Beaux Arts style but I doubt it. It just seems to go into a kind of Ryan Murphy historical fantasy in its storytelling while being very specific about other details.
That said, I understand that the series had a lot of trouble getting itself made both in its development and when it started to shoot during pandemic. |
