I would agree with all of that. Saw it last night and I also feel that he and Sutton Foster have zero chemistry. And I assume their occasional breaks, laughing at each others’ antics, is orchestrated and I found it annoying. I just didn’t enjoy myself at all. I felt that everything is pointing at him “he’s the star!” And that swallows up everything and everyone else - Jefferson Mays, Jayne Houdyshell - they barely register. It’s such a waste of their considerable talents.
I was really disappointed. I wanted to love it. I just feel like sometimes he works so hard to make it look easy.
None of that will matter - he’s the star and the audience ate everything he threw their way with a giant spoon. They loved him. And as long as he’s in it, it’ll sell out.
(On the positive side, I liked the kid who played Winthrop!) |
