| As far as I'm aware, code-switching between full-on American and full-on English dialects is simply not a thing. Even in the clips of Gillian Anderson with an "American" accent, you can still clearly hear that it's blended with certain British influences. It's quite common to have a blended/hybrid accent that might lean one way or another depending on the situation, or for an accent to firmly change over the course of many years. But doing a hard shift between two "pure" dialects? That's pretty bizarre, and for me at least, unheard of. It seems much more likely that her real accent is American. I went to school with a fair number of kids whose parents had foreign accents (both ESL accents and non-American dialects). And all of these kids had American accents by the time I started going to elementary school with them, and certainly they never had non-American accents that continued into adolescence or adulthood. So the idea that Settle would have a full-on English accent at age 46, simply because one of her parents is English? Again, that would very exceedingly unusual. So why the British accent in that one interview? It must be taken out of context, right? She must have been putting the dialect as a joke, or as some sort of challenge. |
