| An anecdote from my own life: One of my college friends came to the US from India when he was about 3, and therefore had no "foreign" accent at all. I was in his room when his mother called, and he talked to her with this incredibly strong Indian accent. I had known him for years at that point, and the sudden difference came out of nowhere as far as I was concerned. It felt a little bit like I felt watching Settle on British television after having seen her interviewed on American TV several times, this sense of "What is happening right now?!?!?" I had never witnessed such dramatic code-switching before, and I asked him about it. He was aware he was doing it, but I don't think he realized how dramatic the difference was. It was about as pronounced as Keala Settle's code-switching. Like my friend, I would imagine Settle knows it's happening but not how dramatic it may seem to the outsider, because it's very natural for her. Since then, I've seen co-workers go from "standard corporate" to something different, not only in accent but also in word choice, when outside of work. The most striking examples I've seen have been from co-workers who belong to some underrepresented group as they go from the formality of work to a more informal setting where their underrepresented group is the vast majority. As with Settle and my friend, I imagine people realize it's happening but maybe not to the extent that is noted by an outsider. Settle is surrounded by people who are talking in a certain way that she's very comfortable with, so she semi-unconsciously is responding by talking that same way. Mark Rylance does this a bit as well depending on whether he's in the US or the UK, but it's not nearly as dramatic. (Rylance lived in the US from around age 2 to around age 18.) |
