"Once you enter Red Bull Theater's good-natured staging of The Alchemist, your troubles should all dissolve into its warm, candlelit foolishness. Jeffrey Hatcher's adaptation of Ben Jonson's 1610 farce is a giddy whirl, sweeter and less cynical than the original." - Helen Shaw, VULTURE / NEW YORK MAGAZINE

"Shenanigans and slapstick ensue, spiced with an abundance of saucy double, and sometimes single entendres. The dialogue often zings, and Jesse Berger orchestrates the farcical comings and goings-on Alexis Distler's bi-level set at the requisite madcap pace." - Elisabeth Vincentelli, THE NEW YORK TIMES

???? Critic's Pick "The cast is a gas. Manoel Felciano plays the London butler Face, who uses his absent master's house as the base for schemes to bilk pigeons from their ducats. He is joined by two partners in crime: the louche Subtle, played with grandiose ooze by Reg Rogers (any actor can draw out a vowel, but no one draws out consonants so well), and the loose Dol Common, played by Jennifer Sánchez, who adds feminine wiles to the package and delivers bawdy-awdy-awdy in a skintight gold get-up. Jacob Ming-Trent is delightful as the sybaritic Sir Epicure Mannon, whose lust gets the better even of his greed, and the great Carson Elrod brings dynamite comic invention to his portrayal of a dull-minded wastrel; Stephen DeRosa is a Dutch treat as a blond-bobbed Puritan from Holland, and Nathan Christopher brings charmingly dim sunniness to the role of a love-struck tobacconist. Rounding out the cast with gusto are Louis Mustillo, Allen Tedder and Teresa Ava Lim." - Adam Feldman, TIME OUT NEW YORK

???? "Jesse Berger, who heads the Red Bull Theater, has a soft spot in his heart for comedy/dramas past and has now given The Alchemist more than a moment's thought. He's directed and produced an entertaining revival-revisal for our time. He's accomplished this using Jeffrey Hatcher's adaptation and tapping some of the best farceurs hanging around these days. This comedic posse, primed to check in anywhere from mildly risible to hilarious to outright outrageous..." - David Finkle, NEW YORK STAGE REVIEW

"A crackling new adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher. Powered by implausible situations and the kind of supercharged comic performances that make those situations seem perfectly acceptable, The Alchemist represents a mighty return for Red Bull Theater, the scrappy troupe with a joyously modern outlook on the classics. They have the audience rolling in the aisles." - Zachary Stewart, THEATERMANIA

"I am utterly delighted that we are able to share the comic joy of The Alchemist online for the next two weeks! We returned to producing in-person Off-Broadway as quickly as we could after the global shutdown. Because being together is essential. Live theater is one of the things that makes life worth living. So it was a thrill that we were able to have this crackerjack cast playing Jeffrey Hatcher's hilarious adaptation of Ben Jonson's The Alchemist for appreciative, laughter-filled audiences Off-Broadway for a 6-week limited engagement last fall. And now it is wonderful that we will be able to share the hilarious performances of this extraordinary cast-ON-DEMAND, ONLINE." said Jesse Berger, Founder and Artistic Director

""When we began performances of The Alchemist at New World Stages, we heard from people almost every day who were not ready to return to in-person performances. Additionally, over the past two years, we shared our work online with more than 200,000 people from areas near and far. And so we're delighted to be able to share the joy of our show, streamed on demand. We plan to continue to provide online-only experiences as we move forward. But let's be honest, we simply can't wait to share a full production with you, too - something that doesn't involve Zoom boxes! Something that seeks to capture at least some of the thrill of the live, in-person experience. This is your chance to enjoy The Alchemist right at your computer, in the palm of your hand, or on your smart TV - at your convenience! Don't miss the fun," added Jim Bredeson, Managing Director of Red Bull.

Ben Jonson's Jacobean jack-in-the-box of a play is a side-splitting, screwball farce of magical proportions. London. 1610. It's plague time again. When a wealthy gentleman flees to the country, his trusted servant opens his house to a pair of con artists and sets up a den of criminal capitalism. Claiming alchemical powers, the quick-witted trio fleece an onslaught of greedy sheep with their virtuosic ability to improvise amidst increasingly frantic comings and goings. It's comic gold with dupes, double-dupes, duels, disguises, and a lucky flea named "Lewis."

Red Bull Theater, hailed as "the city's gutsiest classical theater" by Time Out New York, brings rarely seen classic plays to dynamic new life for contemporary audiences, uniting a respect for tradition with a modern sensibility. Named for the rowdy Jacobean playhouse that illegally performed plays in England during the years of Puritan rule, Red Bull Theater is New York City's home for dynamic performances of great plays that stand the test of time. With the Jacobean plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries as its cornerstone, the company also produces new works that are in conversation with the classics. A home for artists, scholars and students, Red Bull Theater delights and engages the intellect and imagination of audiences, and strives to make its work accessible, diverse, and welcoming to all. Red Bull Theater believes in the power of great classic stories and plays of heightened language to deepen our understanding of the human condition, in the special ability of live theater to create unique, collective experiences, and the timeless capacity of classical theater to illuminate the events of our times. Variety agreed, hailing Red Bull's work as: "Proof that classical theater can still be surprising after hundreds of years."

Since its debut in 2003 with a production of Shakespeare's Pericles starring Daniel Breaker, Red Bull Theater has served adventurous theatergoers with Off-Broadway productions, Revelation Readings, and the annual Short New Play Festival. The company also offers outreach programs including Shakespeare in Schools bringing professional actors and teaching artists into public school classrooms; Bull Sessions, free post-play discussions with top scholars; and Classical Acting Intensives led by veteran theater professionals. During the pandemic, Red Bull responded swiftly to the shutdown, creating several ongoing programs to serve audiences and artists with our mission: RemarkaBULL Podversations, Online Readings, Seminars, and more.

Red Bull Theater strives to be a home for all artists and theatergoers. We value and practice inclusiveness, equity and diversity in all of our activities, and are committed to antiracist action. All of us at Red Bull Theater are committed to actively working to help realize a more perfect union-a racially and socially just America.

"The classics-shaking Red Bull Theater," as Time Out NY has called it, has presented 20 Off-Broadway productions and nearly 200 Revelation Readings of rarely seen classics, serving a community of more than 5,000 artists and providing quality artistic programming to an audience of over 65,000. The company's unique programming has received ongoing critical acclaim, and has been recognized with Lortel, Drama Desk, Drama League, Callaway, Off Broadway Alliance, and OBIE nominations and Awards.
