He's wonderful in the 1954 tv version of "Lady in the Dark" which starred Ann Sothern. He plays the role of the fashion photographer originally done by Danny Kaye on Broadway, probably the first openly gay character in a major musical. Carpenter is excellent, doing a terrific "Tchaikowsky" and making the most of his showiest numbers in the circus dream as ringmaster, as well as playing the character in a realistic, funny, but not overly campy way that Kaye did when he later did one of those "Musical Tonight" specials put together by his wife Sylvia Fine Kaye.

There's a video of Carpenter I saw years ago on YouTube at a ceremony honoring his famous screen partner Debbie Reynolds and looks like they stayed friends for life. He was a very talented guy who did lots of theater over the years, also a mystery writer among other talents. RIP.
