I think it depends on how good it is. If the show is as funny as 700 Sundays, it should do well.
I've been a fan of all of Jason Robert Brown's scores -- they are quite good. However, with the exception of Songs for a New World, none of his other shows can be considered a success when it comes to being profitable. Parade was a non-profit production at Lincoln Center, but it had a short run, and LCT lost a lot of money by presenting it. It won Tony awards for its book and score and has had a long life in regional theatre. The rest of his shows were commercial productions in New York and not one recouped its investment. Nevertheless, The Last 5 Years has had countless productions in regional theatre. In Chicago (along with Seussical), it has been produced more times than any other musical over the last 20 years.
Brown just doesn't seem to have a knack for teaming up with producers who know how to make a show commercially successful. |
