I have no idea what James Corden is like as a person or whether or not he is a pleasant guy to work with, but he is a Tony- (and Olivier-?) winning actor who turned in a bravura performance in a wildly successful National Theatre hit, a role and performance that would give every indication he'd be equally well-suited to Pseudolys. Additionally he was terrific in another/NT/West End/Broadway smash The History Boys, not to mention the first time I encountered him in Mike Leigh's All or Nothing holding his own opposite Lesley Manville and Timothy Spall.
Admittedly I don't think he'd be a very good Bialystock, even if he were ten or twenty years older.
But I have long thought he'd be an ideal Bill Snibson if Me and My Girl ever gets revived. He has the perfect British cheeky chappy demeanour and with a bit of work on his tap, I think he'd be great.
You don't gotta like his schtick, but to say that he is some kind of pretender to a career onstage is just stupid. |
