The show has been on TDF at least twice and is on TKTS at every performance, including tonight and this week’s Thursday afternoon. Posters keep trying to explain that Jackson’s audience was broader than the coming of age in 80s demographic. But that was true of Cher and Tina and heck, Jimmy Buffet. My point: You can’t lift a pop following and expect them to show up in a Broadway theater 8 times a week. Nothing about the track record for the last few jukebox musicals supports that marketing projection.
For some reason, this show has created the most contentious debate at Broadway World this season. So many have taken up the cause - the show having the right to airbrush post 1993 Jackson history - and furiously denounce anyone who doesn’t appreciate the artist untethered from his demons. It’s odd that this performer would create so much fervor in the theater but the show’s fate may be the turning point for the juke musical. |
