| Thanks to Steve Young and Sport Murphy's book, ''Everything's Coming Up Profits'' and this movie, ''Bathtubs,'' that's opened up an unknown treasure trove of industrial musicals. Years before Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock wrote ''Fiddler on the Roof,'' they penned ''Ford-i-fy Your Future,'' a 1959 musical for the Ford Tractor & Implement Division. One lyric: ''Turn your tractors and implements to a bumper crop of dollars and cents.'' Young, a longtime comedy writer for David Letterman, got to plug his book on Letterman's ''Late Show.'' (Letterman is not only featured in ''Bathtubs,'' he's one of the film's executive producers.) And Young chatted about John Kander and Fred Ebb writing ''Go Fly a Kite,'' an industrial for GE, with a ''love song told in electrical terminology.'' That was in Sept. 1966. Two months later, Kander and Ebb's ''Cabaret'' opened on Broadway. To hear more about these types of shows, go to industrialmusicals.com, where Young has curated rare tunes from the '50s, -60s and '70s. As for Young's 2013 book, that same copy is going for $446 on eBay. Sorry, I'm not sold on that price, especially since it originally cost only $39.95. |
