| I was pretty disappointed with this new musical effort by the New Group. On paper it looked Broadway bound, but I would be surprised if that is where this show is going. A talented cast is mostly wasted on undeveloped characters and little structure. The score has moments but it registers as too much and not enough simultaneously. The same can be said for B T Jones' choreography. Brandon Victor Dixon is enormously talented but does not get many moments to shine as his character is mostly unsympathetic and frankly despicable. Lillias White comes and goes without any purpose that I could understand other than sing the hell out of her songs. Tamika Lawrence was the one person who is really given some great scenes in the second act and almost transforms the show into what it might have been. I was surprised that there was no program credit for the writer of the source material. |
