| Is it true as the other board is saying that that they cut “Four Strikes Against Me” (one of the best 2 or 3 numbers in the score) and gutted any references at all to the character of the sister being (in her words) fat?- which was, after all, one of the main distinguishing characteristics of that role, and the self-aware sense of humor she had about it was one of the things that led Martine Allard to get a Tony nomination for it. I thought this was a strange, unnecessary season - and Tap Dance Kid was the one show I was semi-interested in, because it’s a guilty pleasure of mine. But I guess I’ll be skipping Encores till at least 2023. It never made sense to me why they would do one overproduced Sondheim show (possibly THE most overproduced) preceded by two mediocre shows from the mid-80s/mid-90s that most people aren’t interested in and those of us who do remember them don’t necessarily remember all that wistfully. Many people posited that it was because these younger titles would sell better but that’s clearly not the case, as I’ve been saying for the past year. I think they must believe that only people over the age of 80, or even 60, are interested in revisiting the lesser-known but still-worthy work of the greats like Gershwin, Porter, or Jerry Herman for that matter. But there are plenty of people, of all ages, who will turn out for these things if they’re done even half as well as the Tyne Daly “Call Me Madam”, the Martin Short “Promises Promises”, the Vanessa Williams “St Louis Woman”, or their Allegro, New Moon, Babes in Arms, etc. Yet for some mind-boggling reason , the new powers that be elected to do The Life and Tap Dance Kid over the never-revived but still cult-classic-status of Kurt Weill’s “Love Life”. I wish them well but someone there has their head up their ass. |
