| I seem to be in the minority as remembering having really liked the show and score on B'way. Was it pulitzer material? No - but I do think there were a lot of good things in there. (To be fair - I don't remember the book well, mostly the score and the story so the book scenes may have been weaker than I'm remembering). As for Four Strikes - I agree. Her character was clearly written as being smart and motivated and someone who should have everything it takes to be successful other than the traits that are discriminated against for various reasons (racial, looks, age). I find nothing PC at all about changing a character from fat to thin when her being treated unfairly because of her weight was central. Especially when that treatment is 100% still around today. Again - I cannot remember the book scenes and if there were lines that were inappropriately played for laughs related to her weight but it could have been fixed in a way other than just ignoring it. The original girl's performance - and that song in particular - is one of the parts of the original production that I remember most clearly. |
