The '83 original production was not a great musical, but apparently it was an entertaining one. It showcased the burgeoning talent of Hinton Battle, Samuel E. Wright, and Alfonso Ribeiro, not to mention others like Alan Weeks and Jackie Lowe. Was that a bad thing?

Maybe the idea behind the Encores show is to do the same for the new black talent of 2022. Just IMO.
