This thread sent me down memory lane and thanks to another poster found a few You Tube videos of Martine Allard doing a few songs from the 1985 tour (and her also singing Four Strikes a couple years ago for the NJPAC cast!). I had not known she was still singing and performing and was great to get to listen to her!

Re-listening to a few other that characters songs, it's was so clear how the writers were showing a character who is unfairly treated for her looks and who is able to poke fun at herself while at the same time being clearly emotionally damaged by they way she is treated. The lines about "who's going to marry me", "I know I'm not pretty", etc. really show how even someone who is smart and can rationally process the unfairness of it all still feels and internalizes it. Not sure the rationale behind not taking the opportunity to strengthen that message rather than avoid it. A real lost opportunity to show how fat-shaming and really bullying in any form causes damage to your self-image.
