I saw the original "Tap Dance Kid", and actually thought the original book was very good -- I thought the score was serviceable, but had it been better, I felt that the show would have been done more by schools and regionals afterwards. What I do remember was Hinton Battle's wonderful dancing and Samuel E. Wright and Hattie Winston were also quite good. Especially fine was Martine Allard, who was wonderful, very deserving of her Tony nomination and memorable to this day. By casting her role with a thin actress and changing the lyrics apparently to her song and/or in the book (based on reports of the revival) from how she was originally referred to as being overweight and/or fat, the people doing this show have done a disservice to a heavier actress by taking away a role meant for her by being too scared of being called out by --- somebody; it's like casting Tracy Turnblad with Twiggy in "Hairspray" and getting rid of the Hefty Hideaway. Absolutely ridiculous. Plus I hear they've cut down the book, which actually dealt with a lot the emotional stuff of the show better than the music. This sounds very disappointing and is not a good start for new management.
