As best I can parse it, the objection is to discussing abuse in a way that implicates and tarnishes the image of the abuser or reflects that the abused party is still struggling with the damage of said abuse.
I’d have more respect if this were a full stop blanket condemnation of sharing the stories of personal abuse, as problematic as that is, but the shiv in the belly is this suggestion that the appropriate response to being abused is to forgive the other person and treat the abuse as a purely philosophical question.
It does rather let the abuser off the hook, as if we blame Nina for her downfall but shrug over Trigorin. As often happens, he’s doing fine and she’s freaking out thinking she’s the seagull. |
