Hey musical theatre types I need your help!!!
You know that song in a musical where all the characters are about to reach the pinnacle of the story?
So I’m thinking Quintet in WSS where everyone thinks their lives are about to get better when in fact they’re not.
One Day More in Les Mis when everyone is so hopeful and optimistic for what’s about to come.
Christmas Bells in Rent where all the character arcs are pretty laid out.
A Night We’ll Never Forget in Carrie - the audience knows what’s going to happen before the characters do.
‘Til We Reach That Day in Ragtime where everyone is choosing their fork in the road.
I could go on but I have three questions:
1. This IS a type of song right?
2. Is there a name for it (for example an “I want” song?)
3. Do you love these songs as much as I do?
Either way, drop your faves below! The release of Sextet from Tick Tick Boom got me on this thinking track. |
