| I would be very surprised if Danielle had never met Oprah before, specifically while doing the show on Broadway. Oprah has an enormous connection with this show, having produced the original production and been famously public about her support of it, and obviously creating the role of Sophia and getting an Oscar nom for it in the film, the role Brooks played in the revival. She was also a producer of the revival, apparently OWN even made a documentary special about Oprah's return to Broadway as a producer. Playbill says "the special will chronicle the Broadway debuts of Oscar and Grammy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson (as Shug Avery), "Orange is the New Black" star Danielle Brooks (as Sofia), playing the role done by Winfrey herself in the 1985 film." She also attended opening night of the revival. So... yeah, this can't be Danielle's first time. I think besides it being OPRAH and how much she means to people (especially black women), I think she also knew clearly that it meant she got the job before it was said out loud. And now I've found pics of them together. Ha. So yeah. It seems EXTREMELY unlikely that they'd have cast anyone but Danielle, unless they were going for a big name celebrity. But it is nonetheless odd to have her audition after all this. |
